As seen on PBS Mystery!Includes Previously Unreleased Episodes Waxwork and AbracadaverFrom the vulgar brothels of London's fogbound streets to the respectable royal apartments of Windsor Castle, Sergeant Cribb maintains a level head and a wry sense of humour to unravel complex crimes in Queen Victoria's England. A detective of Scotland Yard's newly formed Criminal Investigation Department, Cribb receives little support for his efforts from his superiors. Wearing his trademark bowler hat and squeaky boots, Cribb relies on his own shrewdness and the plodding assistance of Constable Thackeray to expose the vile deeds of Victorian criminals. Review: Great Series - This is another great British series. It has mystery and some light comedy. The acting is very good, and so are the stories. Even though Sergeant Cribb is different than Sherlock Holmes, he is just as enjoyable to watch. Review: Good stories, well acted - While this is not my favorite of the British mysteries I have seen, I found it to be very enjoyable.

Great Series
This is another great British series. It has mystery and some light comedy. The acting is very good, and so are the stories. Even though Sergeant Cribb is different than Sherlock Holmes, he is just as enjoyable to watch.

Another top-notch crime series from Britain
An excellent crime series from Britain which I would recommend to everyone who is a fan of this genre, as I am. Beautifully directed and acted, and set in the Victorian era, all elements contribute to its evocative atmosphere. If you love atmospheric crime drama, this is for you. Gerard Sibbritt

Low production quality and slow-moving stories
The audio quality makes it difficult to understand the characters sometimes, and the video quality makes you wonder if it was shot before WWII. The plots are interesting, but the stories tend to unfold so slowly that I expect they'd lose many audience members. The main character is well-developed, but his assistant is treated like a bumbling lackey, and his boss is the stereotypical incompetent self-centered empty suit. This formula seems very familiar for many British mystery series, though often the boss or the assistant will have some or many redeeming qualities. In summary, I don't mind watching this series, but find it below average.

Great Era Television
If you like British, Victorian, or Edwardian entertainment this show delivers what you want. This series is a complement to Up/Down, The Pallisters, The Forsyth Saga, and of course Serlock Holmes. Can not go wrong on this one.

Don't order this!
The story was to quick and acting contrived. I would not recommend this to anyone as it was a big disappointment!

Not comparable to most British mysteries
Very poor compared to usual British mysteries. Limited camera angles, stories lack depth, characters not interesting. Would not have ordered had I viewed just one show.

As most of you know, there are no episode ...
As most of you know, there are no episode titles listed for Sgt. Cribb. I ordered the complete 7 disk series and found that there were no episode names on the box or on any of the 7 disks. Below is a listing of the contents of the 7 disks. Disk 1: A Case of Spirits; Swing, Swing Together; and Special Features. Disk 2: Wobble to Death; and Invitation to a Dynamite Party. Disk 3: Mad Hatter's Holiday; and The Detective Word Silk Drawers. Disk 4: The Horizontal Witness; Something old, Something new; Special Features; and Credits. Disk 5: The Hand that Rocks the Cradle; and The Last Trumpet. Disk 6: The Choir that wouldn't sing; and Murder, Old Boy. Disk 7: Waxwork; and Abracadaver. Hope this helps. Ray Dickinson

First of all, you need to get used to the slower pace of television from about thirty years ago, but if you can get over that, this series truly entertains. The stories are adapted from Peter Lovesy's Sergeant Cribb books. Peter Lovesy had previously written a book on Victorian sport which he is passionate about. It shows and gives this series that extra something from a lot of other Victorian detectives. For instance, there is one episode where pugilism is the theme; another episode has pedestrianism ( a form of Victorian speed walking) as the theme and one has rowing and Jerome K. Jerome's book "Three Men In a Boat" as the theme. If you are not a sports fan, don't let this put you off as I am not a sports fan in the slightest but found this both interesting and done with a great deal of humour. They are not all set around sports themes there is also spiritualism and the seaside. So if you need to get rid of your stress and cosy down, this is for you.

I looked forward to this series as I love British mysteries, but what a complete and absolute disappointment! The stories are unimaginative, the scripts very poor, and the actors, having nothing to work with, are wooden and obviously not interested in what they are doing. What a waste of money this series is!I advise avoiding this truly awful piece of work and buying another movie instead.
