An Extremely Helpful Book

I know this book is great for beginner because I am a beginner and this book was a godsend for me. I was working on a project at work in which Java was being used and this book provided the basic understanding that I needed. It is very well written and filled with examples that make it easier for a novice to understand the central concepts. This book was extremely helpful

A great guide for beginners

Admittedly I am not a computer geek. I know enough to get me by and that's about it, but having website and running into some issues that kept telling me there was a java issue I knew I needed to Learn something about it. This book explained things and help me make sense of it enough that I'm no longer terrified of addressing the issue. Its explained in a way that I could understand which was a huge plus.

A better way for easy understanding!

This a great book for beginners who are trying to learn java and wanting to master it in just a short span of time. This book has the enough information on the early implementation of java, what java is and is presently used for. This is fun to read especially because of its beginner-friendly thoughts and techniques. This book is really a great guide for a better understanding about java. Now it's time for an application of this guide which is very helpful.

Save Your Money

I am baffled at how many 5 star reviews this book has. I'm new to programming, Java is the first language I am learning, so this book is supposedly marketed at me. The author hardly explains anything. I've had to go to other sources to actually learn the concepts he just rushes through, then come back and go through the examples he provides. Upon doing so, I've found several mistakes that should have been caught by simply proof reading. In the section on arithmetic operators, he says the % operator "gives a percentage value after a division operator." No, that is the modulus operator which gives the *remainder* left after a division operation. There are also simple arithmetic errors where the output he gives for a given example of code is incorrect. I know because I'm loading the code into my Java IDE and running it myself. How confusing this would be for a beginner who was actually trying to rely on this to learn from scratch. You'll benefit more from using free online coding websites to learn the basics.

Kinda confused by the book

I was looking for a basic, beginner's book for JAVA.It was large print. Seems to jump around quite a bit, and leaves out a lot of important info. Not the most kid-friendly book either. It does have a website listed where you can apparently download a compiler (we already have a few), has you write a program that says, "Hello World", as does just about every programming book, then it kinda touches on a few other things, but isn't very cohesive. I think I would suggest more of a reference book of commands along with the syntaxes for programming in JAVA for beginners, that has some fun programs to start with, such as a ball bouncing around the screen, a beginner game, such as a "Pong"-like game, perhaps how to code skins or other plug-ins for graphics & sound (perhaps for Minecraft, FL, and a few other things or something similar) that kids and adults can do themselves. Having a good, comprehensive reference manual that's more like a dictionary of code, with syntax,, for myself and kids I am teaching, is far more useful. I found a great book for HTML years ago that is like this, and it was easier to learn, it wasn't wordy, and had me and my students up and running in no time.Programming doesn't have to be dry or black and white, nor IMHO should it be. I'm going to keep looking for a good book to teach with. Perhaps this author can compile such a book? If you'd like a model of what works well for young kids, and can find it, the old Commodore 64 Programming Manual was great to learn and teach BASIC programming language. This book was a bit too wordy, not enough getting to the meat of things, and it lost me after the 1st program, as it wasn't what I had hoped for in a beginner's manual for JAVA. I *DO* like that it is in large print, yet I also realize that a comprehensive programming manual would be prohibitively huge if it were in large print. A syntax book would be good to have in large print, however. This might be OK for some, but it just wasn't what I had expected for a beginner. I'll keep looking.

Highly recommend

I have been interested in Java programming for quite some time now. Nathan's book does a really great job at breaking things down. I have always had a problem with numbers and letters combined together so two read troughs through anything basic having to do with programming is always necessary if not more. I believe just one more read through will be sufficient for this book. It is a really good beginner's book. I highly recommend.

The best Java basics book!

My son is taking a programming class in high school. I bought this as a supplement to his class and it has completely replaced it. He is ahead of everyone in his class as during his study halls he reads this book. He is quite pleased with it and wants to learn another programming language and we will definitely look at this publisher for that one too!

Simple book

It is a very simple explanation for the language with examples. But it is just too sime and short. Hope the second one e will have some concrete stuff.

Poorly written, repetitive, very short

I received this book and was able to read it cover to cover within an hour. They have one piece of code that they use throughout the book which is good, thats why it gets its 2nd star, but really the 106 pages or whatever it is is really 54 pages because you see the same code over and over.Eight pages of this book is just listing release notes between the different Java versions. As a beginner, who cares ?Chapters 7 and 8 (Data Types and Variables) are actually almost identical, just written from a slightly different point of view.An example of the poor writing for a beginner - the definition of a 'double' data type is 'a double precision 64-bit IEEE floating point' - which is the exact Google result you get. But a beginner needs to know that it is used to storing fractional numbers, sufficient for storing 15 decimal digits. Just poorly done, throughout...
